From the Waters to the Wild

Your guided walk begins at the Castle entrance, where you step into centuries of history and natural beauty. From here, your guide leads you toward the bridge and the enchanting Cong River, whose remarkable journey begins over three miles away. Flowing underground from Lough Mask, the river rises dramatically in the surrounding woodlands one of the largest and most impressive water “risings” in the world.

Near the helipad, you’ll pause for an overview of the Castle’s story, from its 1228 origins to its evolution into one of the world’s most distinguished 5‑star estates. Continuing onward, you’ll encounter some of the estate’s magnificent “Guinness trees,” along with native Irish species and historic plantings dating back to the 1840s. Your guide will also highlight the estate’s restoration efforts, including the removal of invasive cherry laurel and the replanting of native trees.

As the walk curves back toward the Castle, you’ll enter the charming walled garden, home to Western Red Cedars, Holm Oaks, and Monterey Pines. Passing through the distinctive S‑shaped tunnel, you’ll notice the rare “egg‑box” limestone formation marking the entrance to the elegant hornbeam walk.

The route continues to the farmyard and kitchen garden, where self‑seeded saplings reveal the woodland’s natural regeneration. Nearby stand the striking Monkey Puzzle trees, planted in the 1870s by the Guinness family. Walking along the broad avenue, you’ll see the remaining Monterey Pines and towering Giant Coast Redwoods, over 155 years old.

Following the shoreline of Lough Corrib back to the Castle, you’ll take in native trees, tranquil waters, and insights into the lake’s origins, wildlife, and vast island‑dotted expanse. After about an hour, you return enriched by the history, heritage, and natural beauty of the Ashford Estate.
