Occupying a majestic location on the Umhlanga beachfront in KwaZulu-Natal province, The Oyster Box is one of South Africa’s most celebrated hotels, as famous for its remarkable coastal views as the understated luxury and gracious hospitality that have become the hallmarks of this cherished seaside destination.

Set just 15 minutes’ drive from King Shaka International Airport, The Oyster Box offers an array of individually decorated rooms and suites, an award-winning spa set amid tropical gardens, and a mouth-watering menu of restaurants and bars.

With South Africa’s Covid-19 recovery well underway, we are delighted to once again welcome international travellers back to The Oyster Box.

Are there any changes to check-in or checkout?

Our check-in/checkout time remains the same however we will try our best to accommodate early check-in requests to reduce wait times and accommodate travel schedules. We will also be offering our guests the opportunity to check-in/out and pre-pay online to avoid unnecessary wait times at the hotel.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Appropriate PPE is worn by all employees and in adherence to any government or local regulations and guidance. Guests are required to wear a mask in public areas of the hotel, unless you are exempt or eating or drinking. We provide each guest with an amenity bag at check-in which contain hand sanitiser and alcohol wipes for personal use. Face masks are available on request. Contactless hand sanitiser dispensers are also placed at key guest and employee entrances and contact areas throughout the hotel and we will conduct temperature checks for all staff on arrival to the hotel.

Are there any changes to my room?

  • All bed linen and towelling are changed daily and continue to be washed at a high temperature in accordance with latest guidelines
  • Extra pillows and blankets stored in guest room wardrobes have been removed, but available on request
  • Daily turndown service is available at the guest's request
  • We are not operating a mini bar service however all items are available through room service including soft drinks, wine and spirits, snacks and treats
  • Tea and coffee making facilities have been removed from the room, but can be provided on request
  • Complimentary tea and coffee are available through room service, with our compliments
  • Bottled water will continue to be provided in the room for your compliments
  • Newspapers and magazines will be available through an online service for guests to access through their own devices, on a complimentary basis

What additional cleaning protocols are being introduced?

Industry leading cleaning and sanitising protocols are used to clean guest facilities, with particular attention paid to high-touch items including television remote controls, toilet seats and handles, door and furniture handles, taps, nightstands, telephones, in-room control panels, light switches, temperature control panels, alarm clocks, luggage racks and flooring.

Is there still a buffet breakfast?

Buffet breakfasts are no longer be served in the restaurant, instead we continue to offer a delicious a la carte breakfast service which can be enjoyed in the breakfast room or in the guest room through room service. Tables in restaurants and bars have been arranged to ensure appropriate distancing and menus are single-use.

Are the restaurants and bars open?

Yes the restaurants and bars are open and appropriate changes to seating have been made to accommodate physical distancing. Buffet and table-side service are not available, but a delicious a la carte offering to include seasonal specials and signature dishes is served as normal. Private dining spaces are also available on request.

How and where can guests be tested for Covid-19?

Drive-thru testing is available at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports from €129.

Where is the nearest doctor and pharmacy?

The nearest doctor and pharmacy are in Cong, our nearby village.

Who should I contact if I have Covid symptoms while staying at the hotel?

Where can I quarantine if required?

If required, guests must only quarantine in their room. Room service will be available and delivered to the guest's bedroom door. We will endeavour to ensure that our guests are made as comfortable as possible and afforded every courtesy whilst minimising the risk of any direct contact with our team members or other guests who may not be in quarantine.
